VE Day 80th Anniversary

PRESS RELEASE
VE Day 80th Anniversary
Stone Town Council is proud to host a day of remembrance on Thursday 8th May 2025, marking the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day. The community is warmly invited to join a series of commemorative events to honour the courage, resilience, and sacrifice of those who lived through and served in the Second World War.
The day will begin at 9:30am with the raising of the VE Day Flag in a short ceremony at the flagpole located at the top of the High Street.
Evening events commence at 8:30pm at the Stone War Memorial, also situated at the top of the High Street. Attendees will be treated to performances by the Florence Brass Band and the Stone Choral Society, followed by a commemorative service and wreath-laying ceremony. At 9:30pm, Stone will join the national tribute with the lighting of a Beacon, symbolising peace and unity.
As part of the day’s tributes, the Stone Heritage Centre will host a special VE Day exhibition, open from 11:00am to 9:30pm. The exhibition will explore Stone’s wartime history and share personal stories from the local community who contributed to the war effort. Admission is free, and no booking is required. This exhibition will be running at the Heritage Centre until 24th May.
Commemorations will conclude on Sunday 11th May at 10:45am with a special VE Day service at St. Michael & St. Wulfad’s Church. All are welcome to attend this heartfelt service of reflection and gratitude for peace.
